To become a licensed teacher in the Philippines, an aspiring teacher are required to take the Licensure Examination for Teachers. The Licensure Examination for Teacher (LET) is given by the Professional Regulation Commission to qualified individuals. Once the examinee passes the exam, he/she will be given the title "Licensed Professional Teacher". The title "LPT" is used to append after the licensed teacher's name. However, anyone who is not a licensed teacher but uses "LPT" will be punished by the law. The Licensure Exam for Teachers is required for everyone aspiring to teach in the Philippine public school system. The exam is given twice every year on the months of March and September. As prescribed by RA No. 7836 (Philippine Teachers Professionalization Act of 1994) and as amended by RA 9293, a citizen of the Philippines or an alien whose country has reciprocity with the Philippines can apply. The applicant must be at least 18 years old. The applicant is of good moral character and good moral reputation with moral values, has not been convicted by final judgment by court for an offense involving moral turpitude.
Aside from the requirements above, the law also prescribes that an examinee should be a graduate of a school, college or university recognized by the government and possesses the minimum educational qualifications, as follows: For teachers in preschool, a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education (BECED) or its equivalent; For teachers in the elementary grades, a bachelor’s degree in elementary education (BSEED) or its equivalent; For teachers in the secondary grades, a bachelor’s degree in education or its equivalent with a major and minor, or a bachelor degree in arts and sciences with at least eighteen (18) units in professional education; and for teachers of vocational and two-year technical courses, a bachelor’s degree in the field of specialization or its equivalent, with at least eighteen (18) units in professional education.
