Riding a ship as a seaman in the Philippines is not easy. Aside from the requirement of a maritime degree like Bachelor of Science in Marine Transportation or Bachelor of Science in Marine Engineering, an aspiring seaman should also take the BST course. The Basic Seaman Training course is a seven-day training course. The course includes Personal Survival Training, Personal Safety and Social, Responsibility, First Aid, and Fire fighting and fire prevention. After the completion of the BST training, an aspiring seaman should proceed in completing his seaman's requirement. The seaman's requirements is as follow: BST Certificate, which aspiring seaman should get after training or schooling. Seaman’s Book, or a document that serves as the passport in the maritime industry. You can apply for a Seaman’s Book through the MARINA website. A Seaman Record Book or Continuous Discharge Certificate is a continuous record of a seaman’s service. It is the official and legal record of a seaman's sea experience. Passport, issued by DFA. Transit visa, although your employer will assist you in getting one as soon as you are hired.
After finishing the requirements, an aspiring seaman should proceed in finding a job in a manning and shipping agencies. Make sure to check the list legitimate and accredited agencies in POEA website to avoid fake agencies. Once hired, a seaman should legitimate his status. A seaman should register with POEA to become an official and registered Filipino seaman. After riding a ship and legitimizing their status, seamen should not just settle in their job and remit money to their family, they should also take programs to boost their knowledge and take MARINA licensure examinations for higher positions in the vessels, like Chief Marine Engineer and Master Mariner.
