For a person to be admitted to the bar and the practice of Law in the Philippines, he/she must take and pass the Philippine Bar Examination first. It is the national licensure exam for admission to the practice of law exclusively administered by the Supreme Court Bar Examination Committee. It is conducted during the four Sundays of September, or October, or November of every year. Aside from the requirement of a bachelor's degree (with academic credits in certain required subjects) and a professional law degree (LL.B. and J.D), every applicant for admission as a member of the bar must be a citizen of the Philippines, at least twenty-one years of age, of good moral character, and resident of the Philippines; and must produce before the Supreme Court satisfactory evidence of good moral character, and that no charges against him, involving moral turpitude, have been filed or are pending in any court in the Philippines. Candidates who meet all the admission requirements usually enroll in special review classes after graduating from law school. These programs are held from April to September in different schools and review centers.

There are 8 subjects in the Philippine Bar Examination. Two bar subjects shall be taken every week, one is scheduled in the morning while another is in the afternoon. The subjects and their corresponding weight is as follows: Civil Law with 15%, Labor Law and Social Legislation with 10%, Mercantile Law with 15%, Criminal Law with 10%, Political and International Law with 15%, Taxation with 10%, Remedial Law with 20%, and Legal Ethics and Practical Exercises with 5%. An examinee of the Philippine Bar Examination obtaining a general weighted average of 75% or higher, with no grade falling below 50% in any bar subject will be admitted to the bar.
