          According to Miguel Angel Rocha, the EVP/COO of CF Sharp Crew Management, Inc., one of the leading manning companies in the Philippines, there are around 80 to 100 maritime schools in the Philippines. And these maritime schools offer the required degrees for aspiring Filipino seamen such as Bachelor of Science in Marine Transportation and Bachelor of Science in Marine Engineering or basic seaman course. There is also a Seaman State Board Exam that can be taken after taking the maritime programs. The Maritime Academy of Asia and the Pacific is the top maritime school in the Philippines with a board exam passing rate of 79.4%, Palompon Institute of Technology - Palompon comes in second with 79.1%, followed Technological Institute of the Philippines with 77.1%, Lyceum of the Philippines University - Batangas with 75.2%, Philippine Merchant Marine Academy with 74.9%, Asian Institute of Maritime Studies with 71.2%, Misamis Institute of Technology with 66.3%, John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University - Molo with 65.7%, Baliuag Maritime Foundation with 53.3%, and PMI Colleges - Quezon City completes the list with 52.0%.

          The first thing that aspiring seamen need to do to become a seaman is to have a maritime training in the Philippines. Take the basic seaman training course known as BST and get a certification. The training includes; Sea Survival Techniques, Personal Safety and Social Responsibility, First Aid, Fire Fighting and Fire Prevention. Aspiring seamen can get this certification by completing Bachelor of Science in Marine Transportation and Bachelor of Science in Marine Engineering or basic seaman course. The Bachelor of Science in Marine Transportation (BSMT) is a four-year undergraduate degree program which leads to a professional career in the maritime industry, as a marine deck officer. Through this program, the students will be able to acquire the necessary skills and knowledge needed to accomplish their future duties and responsibilities of a marine officer, and will be exposed to theories and practices in seamanship, navigation, ship business, meteorology, and marine laws. Some schools require the applicants to pass the qualifying test implemented by the Marine Transportation Department.

          The Bachelor of Science in Marine Engineering is a 4 year degree program that centers on the construction, operation, and maintenance of different kinds of marine vessels such as cargo ships, cruise ships, fishing boats, battleships and submarines. This program aims to provide students with the knowledge and skills that will enable them to operate and maintain the different machineries installed in marine vessels, including the propulsion plant, adjunct and auxiliary machinery, electrical and refrigeration systems. The tuition fees from topnotch maritime schools in the Philippines ranges from P24,000 to P100,000.
